NAMES & KEEPSAKES

Create cross stitch name patterns

Try one of the examples below with your own name. Sizes are approximate; check the preview for your text’s dimensions before you download.

First name in Cursive

Setup
Text EMMA · Cursive · letter spacing 0 · center · DMC 321
Chart
36 × 12 squares · About 100 cross stitches
Size
On 14-count over one: roughly 2.6 × 0.9 in for the design only
Tip
Good for ornaments and small hoops. Add 2–3 in fabric margin on every side before cutting.

Name over a year

Setup
Line 1 EMMA · line 2 2026 · Cursive · line spacing 2
Chart
36 × 22 squares · About 220 cross stitches
Size
On 14-count over one: roughly 2.6 × 1.6 in
Tip
Stack the year under the name. If the year looks heavy, switch only the year to Tiny.

Short word in Block

Setup
Text HOME or LOVE · Block or Bold · letter spacing 1
Chart
HOME in Block is about 27 × 11 stitches; LOVE in Bold about 35 × 11
Size
On 14-count over one: roughly 1.9–2.5 in wide
Tip
Block stays readable at a distance. Bold suits monograms and pillow text.

After the lettering looks right, open the chart in the pattern editor via the tool, or go to the Cross Stitch Pattern Maker to add borders, motifs, or extra colors on the same grid.

BEFORE YOU CUT FABRIC

How to size your cross stitch letters

Finished size depends on stitch count and fabric count—not on how large the preview looks on screen. The size shown excludes extra fabric for framing or finishing.

The simple formula

Width (inches) = pattern width in stitches ÷ fabric count. Height uses the same math. On 14-count Aida stitched over one, a 70-stitch-wide name is 5 inches across. Always leave extra fabric on every side for your hoop, finishing, or framing.

If you stitch over two threads on evenweave, use half the labeled fabric count in the formula (for example, treat 28-count over two like 14-count).

Use the cross stitch fabric calculator to include margins and work out how much fabric to cut.

Example: 80 stitches wide, over one

Design width for a 80-stitch-wide chart on common fabric counts, stitched over one
Fabric countDesign width
11 ct7.27 in
14 ct5.71 in
16 ct5.00 in
18 ct4.44 in

Example only. Your live preview shows the exact width and height for the text you typed. Add margin beyond these design sizes before cutting fabric.

BEFORE YOU THREAD THE NEEDLE

Frequently
asked questions

Find answers about downloads, letter styles, sizing, and editing your pattern.

Is this cross stitch font generator free?

Yes. Lettering styles, live stitch previews, DMC thread colors, fabric-count sizing, PDF and PNG downloads, and A–Z alphabet PDFs are free. No account or payment is required.

Can I create a cross stitch pattern from my name?

Type the name into Your text, pick a font and DMC color, then download a printable chart. Multi-line phrases and dates work the same way—press Enter for a second line. Try the name recipes below the tool for starting setups.

Can I generate cursive cross stitch letters?

Yes. Choose Cursive for script-style names and initials. Very long phrases may need Tiny, tighter letter spacing, or two lines so the chart stays a comfortable size.

Can I download a printable cross stitch alphabet?

Yes. In the tool, use Download A–Z alphabet PDF. You get uppercase and lowercase A–Z, digits 0–9, a symbol key with DMC codes, and numbered chart pages for the font and thread color currently selected. You can also type A–Z yourself for a custom layout.

How do I calculate the size of cross stitch letters?

Finished design width (inches) = pattern width in stitches ÷ fabric count. Height uses the same formula. Example: 80 stitches on 14-count Aida over one is about 5.71 in wide. The live preview shows your chart’s stitch size; add extra fabric on every side for hoops and finishing. Over-two stitching uses half the fabric count in the same math.

What characters and chart sizes are supported?

A–Z, a–z, 0–9, and common punctuation (space, period, comma, ! ? ' " - : ; & ( ) @ #). Text is limited to 120 characters. Charts can be up to 300 × 300 stitches. If a character cannot be included, a message below the preview lists what was skipped.

Can I edit the generated letters after download?

Yes. Choose Open in pattern editor to save the chart on this device and open the free Cross Stitch Pattern Maker. There you can draw, erase, recolor, and add motifs on the same grid. PDF and PNG stay available if you only need a printable chart.
